LOUIS ASHER (German 1804-1878) A PAINTING, "Maidens with Child," oil on canvas, signed lower left/center. 65" x 55" NOTE: Louis Asher, originally Julius Ludwig Asher, (1804-1878) was a German artist. Asher was born at Hamburg on 26 June 1804. He studied there under Gerdt Hardorf and Leo Lehmann, and in 1821 went for further instruction to Dresden, and from there to Düsseldorf, where he entered the studio of Cornelius. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. from Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and Engravers by Michael Bryan.
There is evidence of an antique restoration and inpainting at the upper center of the arch near the tree in the foreground, in the mother's lacy veil, her proper right eyebrow, near the plants at her feet, and the rocky base where the baby stands. Possible varnish deterioration and craquelure is noted throughout. The canvas has an antique liner. Otherwise in very good condition.
