Russian Kovsh, Romanov eagle medallion, 2"X7"

Sign In to see what this sold for

Important Russian silver and shaded enamel Kovsh. The handle and body are brightly colored with exotic flowers and scrolling foliage in complimentary colors. The vessel is enhanced with polished cabochons, three emerald green and one amethyst on the body and a ruby set on the handle. A figure of the Romanov eagle stands guard on the rim. A raised and enameled medallion inside the bowl exhibits the crowned Imperial Eagle with outstretched wings. Upon his wings are the Royal family Coat of Arms, on his chest the shield of St. George slaying the dragon, his claws clutching an orb and a torch. A decorative wreath surrounds the eagle. Height to the figural eagle is 3 inches, to the handle is 2 1/4 inches and the length being 7 1/2 inches. The edge of the rim is impressed with the "84" standards beside a left facing Kokoshnik, the cyrillic initials of the assayer is along side. The assayer cyrillic initials are obscure, however, the second letter could be an L. An oval impression, possibly the silversmith monogram is filled in with silver and is indistinct. There is a chip measuring a half inch by an eighth inch on the green enamel background. It is located on the side of the vessel below the beaded rim and near the handle. This is an infrequently seen kovsh. A very impressive vessel.
